New York City TourismNew York, New York, the city that was so good they named it twice, no wonder it attracts more than 47 million visitors every years, both American and foreign tourists. It has to be the one of the most photographed cities in the world, I challenge anyone from the Western World over the age of around 12 not to recognize the glorious Manhattan skyline for a start. So, apart from being the "Big Apple", just why do millions of people visit New York City every single year. What have they got that other places don't? Ellis Island - the gateway to America for millions of immigrants over the years, and home of course to the splendid Statue of Liberty. Broadway - famous for its wonderful musicals and theater productions. Which actors haven't dreamt of treading the boards on Broadway? The smell of the greasepaint, the glare of the lights, the rapturous applause and killer reviews - we can all dream can't we? Museums - New York is as proud of its heritage as it is of its yellow cabs, and there are plenty of museums where you can learn all about the history of this city that never sleeps. Well, if it never sleeps it means that there's always plenty going on to learn about doesn't it? Central Park - this amazing green space right slap bang in the center of one of the busiest cities in the world. Not surprisingly, it's the most visited park in the whole of the United States, not just by tourists but by New Yorkers themselves. Brooklyn Bridge - you can walk it, you can cycle over it, you can stand and look at it or you can take a bus tour past it, but you can never ignore it! It's there to be admired, and admire it you will, I can guarantee it. Fifth Avenue and Madison are some of the most desirable shopping territories in the world. People from Europe go to New York for the weekend to do their Christmas shopping for goodness sake. I suppose people in the UK don't really care what's inside the paper as long as the paper is from Bloomingdales! Add to that the sporting events of the New York Yankees, stuff going on at Madison Square Garden and great street events like the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, and there really is no wonder that New York tops the list of many "must visit before I die". |
